With the launch of the original Karizma back in 2003, Hero Honda, in those days, had established itself as the maker of the best, the fastest and the most powerful bike in the country. It had an almost legendary status that is the same to this day, stunters, tourers, posers, racers, all loved this bike beyond bounds. A close look at the machine reveals that a lot of ingredients have contributed to this hugely popular mix of power, style and efficiency. The amazingly reliable engine from Honda, upright, comfortable seating position and power enough to do an all India tour with the utmost ease. With such acclaimed credentials to its name, making it better was in no way, an easy job.

In theory, creating a sequel was simple; make it bigger and better while retaining its essence. This wasn’t Hero Honda’s first attempt at a creating a successor to an established and reputed bike, the old CBZ was re-invented and bought into the market as the X-treme, sadly though, they never quite managed to re-create the magic; when the time came for Hero Honda to take up the task of re-inventing the hugely popular and much loved Karizma, rumors spread around like wild fires, 250cc with liquid cooling, mono suspension and the usual outrageous predictions, but, it wasn’t too much to ask for, since the old Karizma had set the bar for performance bikes in its time and even after so many years, its performance hasn’t ceased to impress, with the competition scaling new heights, nothing made Hero Honda fans happier than the thought of a new Karizma that could topple the bike that had taken its crown as the performance king- The Pulsar 220. Those were the pre-launch expectations, when the bike was finally launched, the spec sheet seemed frankly disappointing, a minor 0.7 bhp increase in power over the old machine despite an addition of 10kg of body mass, also with the addition of fuel injection, the final price crossed the Rs. 1 lakh mark, it wasn’t all frowns though, the bike seemed better with the full fairing. The cool new all – digital instrument console, rear disc brakes, fuel injection and oil cooling did at least make it seem like a better option than the other bikes in the market. Inch for an inch, we take a really close look at the machine, and ask ourselves if Hero Honda have done justice to the Karizma brand.

Looks and Features : -

The first impression we had of the bike, through the photos were that it was un-inspiring, same quite goes to what it’s like in person, it’s just big, not very handsome to say the least, the headlight looks like a blown up version of the Suzuki GS150R’s. From the rear too, the bike seems disproportionate, a big wide tail light with indicators hovering over a comparatively puny bottom, not what we would like especially considering the price. The front fairing also seems to have received inspiration from another Suzuki bike, the Hayabusa, the ZMR logo has a striking resemblance to the logo on the same. The Panther black paint job on the bike looked good from a distance, but upon close inspection we could find flakes on the surface which was good until we noticed the ripples on the painted surfaces, not a glass like finish as expected. In terms of looks, it is definitely bigger, the ZMR looks good from certain angles especially from the front sides.

The most attractive part though, is the cool new instrument console, it looks great and the whole front fairing, from a riders point of view, is designed around this very object. Numbers are large and clear and does a good job of representing what’s important. The speedo and the odometer glow in amber, while the tacho glows in a light blue shade, it really looks great in the dark. Another cool feature that the bike features is the welcome message, when the key is turned to the ‘On’ position, the following message is displayed ‘Hi, welcome aboard the Karizma ZMR, fasten your helmet and fly safe, Bon Voyage’ an 8 – digit name can also be stored by turning on the ignition while holding the ‘Reset’ button. This name would appear just after the ‘Hi’, Even when turning off, it displays ‘Bye <name>, C U Soon’, we think it’s a nice touch of customization. There’s also the Real Time Mileage Indicator (RTMI) that was first seen on the Glamour Fi, what it does is, based on the last 10 seconds of RPM, throttle, speed and fuel used, the screen displays the approximate achievable mileage. During our tests it usually hovered around 30 – 40 with occasional spikes taking it to 100 and down to 15. This can be a good tool for the conservative tourer. The LED tail lights are also very bright, housing a total of 15 LED’s.

Feature wise, in comparison to the older Karizma, the addition of rear disc brakes and oil cooling will help serve the touring needs better. But the full fairing, while making the bike heavier, simply adds to the effort of cleaning up the insides especially after a long drive through muddy roads, more-over, the lack of a crash guard and the almost unified structure of the fairing means that, in case of it getting damaged, the only option would be to replace the entire thing which is not exactly wallet friendly. Hero Honda should have taken a look at the design of the Yamaha Fazer and R15, both of which have replaceable and inexpensive crash panels on the sides. The addition of fuel injection is also welcome since it eliminates the need to retune the carburetor during high altitude adventures, something that can save a lot of headache.

Overall, the features are quite good, if it wasn’t for the slightly thoughtless design of the faring, we would have highly appreciated it, also the fact that Hero Honda have retained the time display in the instrument console shows that they had the old Karizma in mind while on the drawing board.

Engine and Performance : -

The engine has been one of the favorites of a Karizma owner, the way the power is delivered all the way from the bottom to the top of the rev counter and its eagerness, all have been highly praised in the old Karizma, with the new fuel injected version, Hero Honda have turned up the level of refinement. The engine has its origins in the CRF230 motocross bikes but comes in a more detuned fashion for Indian riding conditions, also the unit has proved its worthiness on the track and on the roads so far by being outstandingly reliable and cheap to maintain. One of the key features is that it is an undersquare engine, meaning that instead of producing maximum power, the torque is made to spread across the entire rev range, effectively making it hassle free to ride around at low speeds.

On the ZMR, the engine has been improved even further, mainly by the addition of fuel injection and oil cooling, with these new additions, Hero Honda have addressed the concerns of the really adventurous and long distance traveler. During high altitude climbs, the old carbureted engine had to be adjusted for the right air-fuel ratio in order to avoid the risk of stalling the engine. The FI system uses several sensors all over the engine to gauge the oxygen level, engine temperature, throttle position, air flow and fuel flow among others, these sensors feed data to the ECU ( Engine Control Unit ) which then sets the appropriate air-fuel ratio. This ensures that the performance and fuel efficiency stays constant under all kinds of riding conditions, the addition of the oil cooler further re-enforces the Karizma as India’s best sports touring bike as it helps keep the bike cool under really harsh, high speed, long distance riding.

As soon as its fired up, the engine settles with almost the same engine note its younger brother, it revs very easily up to the red line. Slot it into first, get moving, twist the throttle at just 2,000 Rpm and you could feel the under-square engine doing its magic, the torque just kicks in from as low as 1,500 Rpm, pushing you back, rev harder and you could feel the wave of power coming your way as the front wheel just looks for a reason to point at the sky. Acceleration at low speeds was so good that after repeated tests, my wrists felt like they were going to get detached from my arms. On the roads at steady speeds of 70 km/h, the ZMR feels just as ready as it was while standing still, twist the throttle and it just shows no signs of hesitation, twist the throttle all the way in 5th gear and it would climb upto 110 without as much as the slightest hesitation and from there on a little crouching down would let you witness 124 kmph after which the bike shows signs of giving up.

The important thing is not how fast it goes, but how it gets there, shifting down is merely an option if you would like to make some noise while going faster, otherwise, in any gear, as long as the meter shows 2,000 rpm, the ZMR is ready for the kill at even the slightest twist of the throttle. It just demonstrates how good the engine really is, yes it’s not the fastest bike around, but who cares, it is really relaxing to drive more so because, as an example, if you were to find a slow moving truck in front, just twist the throttle, move over to the opposite lane, no worries at all and a few seconds later, voila, the truck appears in the rear view mirror, turning into a dot within a few seconds, at cruising speeds, the wind becomes louder than the engine which really overshadows the real fact that it is like a tiger waiting to be unleashed.

In terms of power, we believe that the old bike was faster, mainly due to the 10 kilos of additional weight that this bike has come with, refinement though is much better now, under hard riding, cold and hot weather, the throttle felt consistent unlike the minor fluctuations in power and feel the old bike had especially in cold weather.

Ride, Handling and Ergonomics : -

This is another area where the Karizma’s have managed to stand out and carve a niche for their own, these bikes are essentially sports tourers, bikes that have been designed for long journeys. Even with the addition of the split handlebars, the seating position of the ZMR remains upright as ever, the really wide and low seats surprisingly managed to hide the mass of the machine as soon as it was sat on. It’s comfortable, the new front fairing does help in deflecting the wind to a certain level. Despite the focus on touring, the ZMR manages to be equally sporty around the twisties, the slightly rear set foot pegs, the peg feeler all work together to give this bike some great lean angles. Though it’s not as nimble as, say an RTR, it feels planted and secure. It is definitely wider than before which means zipping through traffic isn’t exactly as easy as it used to be.

The new tubeless tyres go a long way in providing safe and better stopping power, doing justice to the Nissin 276mm front and 240mm rear discs. In effect, at 80, Km/h, at full braking force, the twin discs work like anchors thrown from a ship, a huge ship to be precise. The front end dives in and feels really firm while the rear stays on the ground without skidding at all. Applying the front brakes alone shows how the tubeless tires have improved the entire feel of braking over the older generation. Under hard braking, tubeless tires form a slightly flat surface where the tyre touches the road, this increases the contact area just when its needed, thereby providing more traction. The old tires remained stiff under hard braking causing skids quite easily. We also felt an improvement in tyre tread quality especially when braking on muddy roads where it required a little more effort on the brake levers, than its predecessor, to lose grip.

The suspension was also tuned on the ZMR, most notably at the rear where an inverted gas charged unit sits in place. Inverting the shock absorbers help reduce un-sprung weight thereby increasing damping, we believe this was done to make up for the added weight of the disc brakes on the rear wheel. The ride comfort also depends on the pre-load the shock absorber is set at, going from soft to hard, at the factory – medium setting, the ride was slightly bumpy at the rear when ridden alone, the front forks kept the bike stable and steady across a variety of roads, but it was the rear shocks that needed some tweaking to get the best out of it. Set it at the softest setting and you instantly realize that this bike can actually glide, the ride changes from that of a tractor to a sail boat, across most roads. Overall, the ride, handling, seats and riding position feels good enough for really long journeys across a variety of terrain, we couldn’t find a reason to complain about.

Ownership Experiences and Problems : -

We never expected to hear a niggles about this bike from Lejo Joseph, the owner, but we listened, after all no one knows the imperfections of a bike better than its owner, to begin with the bike has already covered around 1,200 KM and the first service was just completed at the time of our testing. Here are his findings:

The right side rear-view mirror fell off one day while riding, apparently, the screws had come loose due to fairing vibrations. The folks at the service center fixed it by using a bigger, different scew.

The engine jerks during shifts between 2nd and 3rd gear, this was identified to be a problem with the engine mounts, which we think, could be a one-off case.

Mileage, on an average hovers around 35 kmpl and is said to go up to 40 by the time the 3rd service is done.

The bike is also heavy and the rider may tip the bike over if he leans beyond a certain angle while standing still. The scratches on the silencer and fairing are the results of an attempted wheelie, it was this crash that revealed to him that the whole front fairing had to be replaced in case of fairing damage.

The Final Word : -

The bike is no doubt an awesome package, it is clearly not the fastest and Hero Honda had no intention of making it so, the bike shows what all sorts of people really wanted from a Karizma, big bad looks, and most of all, better features. The ZMR hasn’t broken any moulds like its younger brother, but it speaks volumes about what Hero Honda are capable of delivering and how they can improve an already outstanding product. They have surprisingly kept the Karizma DNA intact while making all the changes, Comparing it to the other bike in the segment, the Pulsar 220, the ZMR stands above in terms of features, handling, looks, class, reliability, refinement, brand name and technology, more than enough for it to take the crown from us as the best 220cc bike in the country today.

The YZF-R1 was chosen for its MotoGP®-inspired engine and chassis technology, and for its luxurious fit and finish.
* Back for 2010, the YZF-R1 is the only production motorcycle with a crossplane crankshaft. Crossplane technology, first pioneered in MotoGP® racing with the M1, puts each piston 90° from the next, with an uneven firing interval of 270°- 180°- 90°- 180°. This uneven order does an amazing thing… it actually lets power build more smoothly. That means smooth roll-on delivery out of the corners, with outstanding tractability, followed by very strong high rpm power. It’s a feeling that’s simply unmatched, like having two engines in one: the low-rpm torquey feel of a twin with the raw, high rpm power of an inline four. This breakthrough technology on the YZF-R1 represents a paradigm shift in both technology and performance.
* This R1 keeps all the technological superiorities developed for its predecessor: YCC-T™ (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) is MotoGP® inspired fly-by-wire technology used to deliver instant throttle response. YCC-I® is Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake which is a variable intake system that broadens the spread of power. The fuel injection system provides optimum air/fuel mixtures for maximum power and smooth throttle response.
* The R1 features Yamaha D-MODE (or drive mode) with rider-selectable throttle control maps to program YCC-T performance characteristics for riding conditions. The standard map is designed for optimum overall performance. The “A” mode lets the rider enjoy sportier engine response in the low- to mid-speed range, and the “B” mode offers response that is somewhat less sharp for riding situations that require especially sensitive throttle operation. Switching maps is as easy as pushing a button on the handlebar switch.
* In keeping with this machine’s exceptional cornering ability and crisp handling, the aluminum frame has been designed to offer exceptional rigidity balance. The rear frame is lightweight Controlled-Fill die-cast magnesium, contributing the optimum mass centralization. Suspension includes SOQI front forks which use one of the tricks developed for our winning MotoGP® bikes: independent damping. The left fork handles compression damping and the right side handles the rebound damping. And the rear shock adopts bottom linkage for optimum suspension characteristics.
* The bodywork does more than add break-away-from-the-crowd styling with its more serious, less busy look. The side fairing is smooth for a sleek appearance. And, instead of the usual four-bulb headlight design, the R1 has only two projector-type bulbs mounted closer to the nose of the bike. This positions ram air ducts closer in for a more compact, smooth look. In addition, the rounded lenses are unique to the supersport industry.

Yamaha R1 2010 Specifications

Engine
Type 998cc, liquid-cooled 4-stroke DOHC 16 valves (titanium intake valves)
Bore x Stroke 78.0mm X 52.2mm
Compression Ratio 12.7:1
Fuel Delivery Fuel Injection with YCC-T and YCC-I
Ignition TCI: Transistor Controlled Ignition
Transmission 6-speed w/multiplate slipper clutch
Final Drive #530 O-ring chain

Chassis
Suspension/Front 43mm inverted fork; fully adjustable, 4.7-in travel
Suspension/Rear Single shock w/piggyback reservoir; 4-way adjustable, 4.7-in travel
Brakes/Front Dual 310mm disc; radial-mount forged 6-piston calipers
Brakes/Rear 220mm disc; single-piston caliper
Tires/Front 120/70ZR17
Tires/Rear 190/55ZR17
Dimensions
Length 81.1 in
Width 28.1 in
Height 44.5 in
Seat Height 32.8 in
Wheelbase 55.7 in
Rake (Caster Angle) 24.0°
Trail 4.0 in
Fuel Capacity 4.8 gal
Fuel Economy** 33 mpg
Wet Weight 454 lb

Other
Primary Reduction Ratio 65/43 (1.512)
Secondary Reduction Ratio 47/17 (2.765)
Gear Ratio – 1st Gear 38/15 (2.533)
Gear Ratio – 2nd Gear 33/16 (2.063)
Gear Ratio – 3rd Gear 37/21 (1.762)
Gear Ratio – 4th Gear 35/23 (1.522)
Gear Ratio – 5th Gear 30/22 (1.364)
Gear Ratio – 6th Gear 33/26 (1.269)

Denise Maple, founder of VaVaVroom LLC, received a Future Founders Rookie of the Year Award for her work with students at this year’s student business plan competition at ESPN Zone on May 5, 2010. Maple donates her time and knowledge, mentoring public high school students through the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center’s Future Founder’s Program.

This year’s competition gave 160 students from five South Side public high schools the chance to develop and showcase their own business plans to launch new products and services as young entrepreneurs. The students were recognized for their businesses by a panel of local entrepreneurs and business leaders. A total of $30,000 in prizes was awarded, including $10,000 in scholarships to the Future Founders Academy, an entrepreneurial camp this June. First place was awarded to Morgan Brock from Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy for a patented washcloth design that secures a bar of soap to the washcloth to prevent waste and to save money.

Ms. Maple explains why she is involved in Future Founders, “I get as much out of it as I give. Seeing these kids learn and gain confidence throughout the year is very rewarding for me.”

CEC’s Future Founders program was created in 2005 to expose students to careers in entrepreneurship and to foster skills such as public speaking, presentation, technology, and financial literacy skills by giving them the opportunity to work with successful local entrepreneurs. For more information about the Future Founders program or to become a mentor, visit www.chicagolandec.org/futurefounders.

Denise Maple created VaVaVroom LLC in 2007 to counter a lack of femininity and style in an ever-increasing market of women motorcycle enthusiasts. The apparel company delivers a passion for design, fit, and practicality to the industry. Maple actively supports the biker community with her website, www.vavavroomonline.com, that caters specifically to women that ride motorcycles and scooters.

Suzuki has revealed its 2009 superbike, the GSX-R 1000. Prior to its presentation in Paris, the Global Suzuki site had already published the characteristics of this new bike. The main novelty is the 59mm engine, shorter than that of the 2007 and 2008 models. The wheel base has been reduced by 10mm, and with a longer fork, the weight distribution and traction have been improved. This means the GSX-R 2000 is a more agile bike, and gives greater performance over mixed courses.

The compression ratio has been increased, though Suzuki is not prepared to reveal its secrets here. The bore and stroke has been changed to 74.5mm and 57.3mm (previously 73.4mm and 59mm), and the bike includes a bigger radiator and with a redesigned titanium exhaust.
Forged pistons have been used, from the endurance championship models, while braking is controlled by two 310mm discs and twin radial-mount monobloc calipers.

New styling is designed to reduce turbulence and drag, giving greater riding feel, with a comfortable seat and lighter fuel tank. Other aspects include new multi-reflector headlights and instrument panel.
From the front, the Vespa GTS is instantly recognizable by the position of the headlight placed midway down the shield next to the horn, reminiscent of 1950s Vespas, which had a small lamp on the mudguard. The impeccably finished, double-stitched saddle adds a racy touch while improving the comfort of the ride.
The GTS also features a combination digital/analog dashboard-simple and stylish, the LCD display includes a fuel gauge, a rev counter bar, full and partial mileage, a digital clock with the date, an outside air temperature gauge and a coolant temperature gauge. Analog instruments include a speedometer and a comprehensive set of warning lights: turn signals, position and high beam lights, oil pressure, fuel reserve, the immobilizer LED light and the injection control LED light.
While its natural riding position and ergonomics have always made the Vespa comfortable, the seat on the GTS has a new shape and material for an even better ride. Carrying some bags? A rear luggage rack comes standard, and the underseat storage opens with the press of a button, making those spontaneous trips out of town convenient and hard to resist.

Vespa GTS 250 Scooter 2009

Specifications
ENGINE TYPE : Single cylinder, four-stroke, four-valve, electronic injection, catalytic
QUASAR QUArter liter Smooth Augmented Range)
CYLINDER CAPACITY : 244cc
BORE x STROKE : 2.8" x 2.36" (72 mm x 60 mm)
MAX POWER at SHAFT : 16.2 kW at 8,250 rpm (22 CV)
MAX TORQUE : 20.2 Nm at 6,500 rpm
FUEL / TANK CAPACITY : Unleaded minimum 91 octane / 2.4 gallons (9.2 litres)
DISTRIBUTION : Chain driven SOHC (single overhead camshaft)
COOLING SYSTEM : Liquid
LUBRICATION : Wet sump, chain-driven lobe pump, filtration during aspiration and discharge
IGNITION : Electronic (with inductive discharge, variable spark advance and three-dimensional mapping)
GEARS CVT : (Continuously Variable Transmission) with torque server
CLUTCH : Automatic centrifugal dry clutch with dampers
CHASSIS : Load-bearing sheet steel chassis with welded structural supports
FRONT SUSPENSION : Single-sided trailing arm with dual chamber hydraulic shock absorber with coaxial spring
REAR SUSPENSION : Helical spring with adjustable four-position pre-load and two dual effect hydraulic shock absorbers
FRONT BRAKE : Ø 8.66" (220 mm) disc
REAR BRAKE : Ø 8.66" (220 mm) disc
FRONT TIRE : Tubeless 120 / 70, 12"
REAR TIRE : Tubeless 130 / 70, 12"
LENGTH : 76.4" (1,940 mm)
WIDTH : 29.7" (755 mm)
WHEELBASE : 54.9" (1,395 mm)
SEAT HEIGHT : 31.1" (790 mm)
DRY WEIGHT : 326 lbs (148 kg)
TYPE-APPROVAL : EPA and CARB
AVAILABLE COLORS : Dragon Red, Black, Excalibur Grey, Giallo Lime (Yellow)

I was on out on the 2 lane country roads getting familiar with the feel of one of Victory’s newest touring cruiser. The Cross Roads, along with the fully faired Cross Country were released by the Vee late last year for 2010 and according to initial dealer reports are a big hit with consumers.

After 10 minutes in the saddle, I completely agree. While the bike has a few knocks which I’ll get to later, the overall first impression is a smooth, powerful and quite comfortable machine set up to haul your gear and your significant other and look pretty darn good doing it.

A few days later I’m heading East on Interstate 16, with my bride of 22 years on the pillion; our destination? Savannah Georgia, the city that Sherman found too beautiful to burn.

We’d planned this weekend trip around her birthday, and initially the plan was to take the car and enough clothes and shoes for a 2 week stay. You married men will understand what I mean by that. Most women to have the innate ability to fill up whatever luggage space is available. Give them 12 cubic inches and they’ll want to take 13. If the bag expands, they’ll test the limits of the zipper. My wife’s motto is, “”I can make it fit.” Truth is, she usually does.

When I’d picked up this press bike at my local Victory dealer, Bellamy Motorsports in Swainsboro Georgia, the passenger backrest and luggage rack was not attached. Most press bikes are not two up ready because most moto-journalists don’t ride a passenger on press launches. And, since the Crossroads is so new and dealers are having a hard time keeping them in stock, there wasn’t another one on the showroom floor to steal, er, borrow the needed accessories from.

A quick note to Manny Pandya at Victory got one headed our way but it would not arrive until after our trip to Savannah.

No luggage rack meant we’d have to pack only what would fit into the two hard saddle bags and the little we could stuff into a Saraceni bag that would strap onto the outside of the windshield. But what most concerned me was the absence of a passenger backrest. My wife, to my knowledge, has never ridden any distance without something to support her back and provide a feeling of security.

I was sure she’d be in a foul mood after 90+ miles of worrying about falling off the back. And you know when mamma’s not happy; she makes sure you’re not happy either!

But first, I’d need to tackle the luggage issue. Having taken a Victory Vision on an extended road trip in 2008, I’d had some experience with Victory’s saddlebag setup. The Vision’s saddlebags are deceptively small and I expected the same with the Crossroads. But once I had time to take a good look inside, I was surprised by how much storage these bags provided, as compared to the Vision and other bikes in its class. The specs claim 21 gallons of cargo room. By comparison the Harley-Davidson Road King offers 16.9 gallons cargo space.

Now, unless you’re planning on emptying a beer keg in the bags, I’m not sure why you’d care how many gallons the saddlebag holds, but that’s one of the quirks common to all the manufacturers. You’d think it would be simpler to use cubic inches but because most bags are not perfectly shaped and often contour around the bike frame and components, getting a hard measurement would be difficult.

With luggage a non-issue, there was still the backrest situation to deal with. Short of strapping my bride to me with multiple bungee cords, the only thing to do was promise to be extra careful on the throttle. I assured her I had no desire to sport one of those “The Bitch Fell Off” t-shirts.

Somewhere halfway to Savannah, my wife’s voice comes through the headset in my helmet with, “The way they’ve set this seat up, and with my legs over the saddlebags I feel ok back here. This isn’t nearly as bad as I’d thought it would be.”

Ahhh, the sweet sound of marital bliss! I was mentally checking off the brownie points in my head.

But enough about my marital shenanigans, you’re interested in the Crossroads or you wouldn’t be reading this review.

Having entered their second decade of motorcycle manufacturing, the designs coming out of Medina Minnesota have improved tremendously since their first “cruiser” the V92C in 1999. In fact one reviewer of that early model called it a “self propelled compressor.” Even the diehard Victory faithful couldn’t dispute the brand needed a makeover.

With input from custom bike builders and willingness to start from scratch, today’s models are sleek and visually appealing, built with an eye towards giving the brand its own unique look and the bikes a “customized” look right out of the factory.

The Crossroads styling remains true to the brand and shares some of the styling cues found on the Vision, but the “Jetson” style is toned down quite a bit. Beginning at the front, the HID (high intensity headlight) is housed in a sculpted chrome cover and dominates the 43mm inverted telescoping front fork. The wide handlebars frame the aerodynamic but slightly less angular and graceful, sweeping curved backbone and rounded top saddlebags which flow the eye toward the built-in long tail/brake light combination on the rear fender and LED turn signals. The sculpted front fender hugs the tire and the drivers seat, as in other Victory models, is scalloped into the tank giving that “customized look” lacking in the competition.

Compared against non-faired touring cruisers, the 106 cubic inch single overhead cam power plant is smaller the Star Stratoliner S, (113 cubic inch) but larger than the Harley-Davidson Road King (TC 96 cubic inch) and serves as a stressed member of the two-piece, sand-cast aluminum frame, much like its cousin, the Vision.

Gearheads will understand that the overhead single camshafts and self-adjusting cam chains in the Freedom V-Twin’s solid-mounted engine are more noticeable than the push-rod technology used by the others in its class, but to the average rider it’s indiscernible.

On paper the Crossroads delivers 92 hp and 109 ft-lbs of torque, which again is ahead of the Harley-Davidson but less than the Yamaha Star Stratoliner. While I didn’t have the opportunity to run the Crossroads on a dyno, there was a slight lag in throttle response at a very specific lower rpm range. At first I attributed it to dirty fuel, but it remained after several fill ups; however most owners and riders probably wouldn’t notice it.

On the scale, the Crossroads weighs in at a curb weight of 780 lbs, lighter than both the Road King (812) and the Stratoliner S (802) lbs. Interestingly enough, because it lacks the fairing of its sibling, the Cross Country, the Cross Roads is rated for 20 more pounds of cargo carrying. (580 vs 560) That’s including both driver and passenger and their gear.

The week after the Savannah birthday ride, the passenger backrest and luggage rack arrived at the office. Manny assured me that installation would be quick and simple.

Having been in this business over a decade, I was skeptical, as

but again I was surprised at the simplicity of the design.

The backrest and luggage rack are engineered to work together but while you have to have a passenger backrest to have a luggage rack, you don’t have to add the luggage rack if you don’t need it or want it. If you do, installation takes 15 minutes, maximum. 8 minutes spent reading the directions, 2 minutes for wondering if it can really be that simple and scanning the instructions again because you’re sure you must have missed something and then 5 minutes of actual installation.

I was impressed at how easily the saddlebags and backrest can be removed for that stripped down bagger look. Less than 2 minutes and you can remove bags and backrest. 5 minutes more and you can remove the windshield. If you’re concerned about theft, lock the bags and they can’t be removed.

One other issue we found during our test is the top loading bags will open at highway speed if they’re not securely snapped. Which means you must be careful how much you stuff in the bags, and be sure the latch engages. A good rule would be to always lock the bags while riding and you won’t lose rain suits or hats.

After installing these accessories, we took the opportunity to test the Crossroads fully loaded on a ride to a family reunion. We loaded the saddlebags with rain gear, leather jackets and added a Kuryakyn cooler bag to the backrest/luggage rack and stuffed it full of drinks.

Stopping this fully loaded two wheel limousine falls to Victory’s proprietary brake system. Dual 300mm floating rotors and 4-piston calipers on the front and a single 300mm floating rotor, 2-caliper arrangement on the back. Unfortunately the brakes are not linked, as is the Vision. But, to be fair, neither do the Stratoliner S or the Road King, which are its directcompetitors. In our tests, the front brake is more than adequate, but as you would expect the back locks up easily.

I’m no engineer, but my advice to Victory would be to link the brakes and add an ABS option. Of course if the National Institute for Highway Safety, funded by the insurance industry, has their way, ABS will be required standard equipment on all new bikes in the future.

It was on this trip where we took most of these photos, which meant plenty of opportunities for low speed turnarounds. The Crossroads has excellent manners in this department with its lower center of gravity and 26.3 inch seat height. The passenger sits a few inches higher, which accounts for reasoning for the higher than average windshield. Otherwise your passenger would be left with a sore neck having fought the wind the entire ride.

While the highway bars are there to protect the paint in the event of a tip over, happily we didn’t have to depend on them during our test.

The Crossroads features an air adjustable rear shock which is probably another reason my wife fell in love with the bike. Fully loaded with gear and passenger will most likely require adding air to the rear suspension to keep the suspension from bottoming out on railroad tracks and in spirited leans.

Our fuel mileage varied depending on the load and how it was ridden, as you would expect. Overall the best mileage we got was 41.8 mpg with the least being 35 mpg.

The addition of a true six speed overdrive is an excellent feature and one that increases the comfort level on long rides. I personally wouldn’t consider buying a touring bike without a sixth gear overdrive.

The instrument setup is clean and uncluttered with a single windshield mounted speedometer / tach combo gauge. A finger switch behind the left handlebar grip rotates the multi-function display to indicate total mileage, rpm, fuel gauge, battery charge, time and resettable hour and trip meters. If the wide handlebars and comfortable driver floorboards seduce you into long extended ride times, there is a light on the easy to read, soothing blue, backlit speedometer gauge to warn you when you reach a gallon of remaining fuel.

Our time on the bike was right at the beginning of spring when South Georgia temperatures can fluctuate as much as 40 degrees in a 12 hour period.

On one test day the temperature started out at 45 degrees when we rolled out of the garage, climbed to 85 during the day and ended back at 52 when we parked it. Fortunately this provided a nice contrast for testing the comfort levels of different real world temperatures.

The large stock windshield and lower deflectors do a better than average job with the cool wind and pesky bugs. When things heat up in the summer, comfort would require a change.

The battery is housed in the front, hidden behind a cowling and combine that with the lower wind deflectors and on a 95 degree mid-summer day, the heat produced by the engine will make for an uncomfortable ride. Removing the lower wind deflectors would probably go a long way towards evacuating the heat buildup under your legs.

My only other complaint is on the clutch lever. As far as I could tell, there isn’t any way to adjust the clutch as there is on the brake lever. And on my test mule the clutch lever was 4 inches from the back of the grip. No problem for the highway as the pull is easy (for a non-hydraulic setup) but it quickly become noticeable in stop and go riding. For me it was about an inch too far.

It’s no secret the Crossroads and the Harley-Davidson Road King are competing head to head for the same rider. If you’re using HD as the gold standard for American touring bikes, the Crossroads surpasses the Road King in luggage and horsepower and fuel economy. If the Star is your gold standard then the Crossroads beats it in luggage capacity, fuel mileage and capacity.

Available in solid black, MSRP $16,000 (CA $16,249) and midnight cherry $16,599 and $16,849 in California.

I'm not light,304 lbs, and this little 29cc motor scooter gets me around just fine. Go-Ped is THE BEST when it comes to scooters. AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF, i got this from amazon for less than $385, you can't get it for less than 450 everywhere else on the web. it's got a million aftermarket parts as well. i put a $65 exaust on it and a $12 air filter, so now i can get up any hill i want.ALL IN ALL, i love my Go-Ped and if your looking for a fun and easy way to get around this is the way to go.

"Great if you can run and jump on it to keep the engine running" 2009-07-31
By Bud (FL)
This thing will not run without the wheel spinning. This thing has no clutch.

I do not recomend it unless you want to take your child to the hospital for stitches.

It does work and it is well made but it has the one serious issue.

All Reviews

Buy Now And Free Shipping!
