Question by iceytina: What should I get: motorcycle, moped/scooter, super pocket bike, or...?
I'm looking for a two-wheel vehicle that can get me around town at a decent speed. I have an electric moped that maxes at 25mph but it's slow up hills. So I'm looking for something a little faster, and though I don't know for sure, I feel a gas-powered one is the way to go.

I'm 117lb
5'4"
Average round trip: 15 miles
Speed looking for: 45-60mph

My knowledge of motorcycles in general is quite limited. I've spent several hours researching pocket bikes, mopeds, motorcycles and such and my only conclusion is that ...

49cc = ~30mph
110cc = ~50mph
150cc = ~60mph

I would like to be able to ride in the lanes and keep up with town traffic.
I'm fine if I need to license and insure the vehicle.

Being a freshly graduated student with some loans to pay off, I can't afford anything (over $ 2,000) expensive... so, what should I choose for an around-town, economical gas or electric two-wheel vehicle? My research has opened me up to dozens of brands and varying prices and I'm rather uncertain how to choose. Pro Caliber is the closest motor sports shop in town...

Motorcycles with engine displacement of 100cc or lower are pure commuter bikes. These bikes are preferred when it comes to riding in city traffic across busy lanes. These commuters are suited to people who prefer fuel efficiency, reliability and durability over power and torque. Commuters are good for day to day activities especially for collage and officers goers.

But do not worry; we are not talking about scooters, only motorcycles will be compared in this review. We will review 6 brightest stars of this category, and will attempt to bring out their strong and weak points.

Our contestants are:

Bajaj Discover 100

Bajaj Platina 100

Hero Honda Passion Plus

Hero Honda Splendor Plus

Yamaha Crux and finally

Mahindra Stallio

Lets jump in!

Bajaj Discover DTS-Si 100.

Discover 100cc is positioned by the company as a sporty touring commuter that is good from the any aspect Strongest points of this bike are fuel efficiency and premium equipment, which you wouldn’t expect from a low-priced commuter bike.. Bajaj probably made one of the most successful commuters in Indian market.

Discover has everything a biker needs apart from fuel efficiency and reliability like wide optoprism headlamp with stylish black tinted windscreen, racing style wheel stripes, large and bulky fuel tank with awesome paintings gives good overall impression. LED tail light s also adds a lot to the looks of the bike. For the first time, a 100cc commuter was installed with 5-speed gearbox, LED taillights and Nitrox suspension.

The bike has got amazing specs to that include a 94.38cc engine (might look a bit of weakling on paper, but don’t let it confuse you) , 7.5 Bhp of power @ 7500 rpm and 7.85 Nm @ 5000 rpm .Discover can easily attain an speed of 93-95 Km/Ph without any trouble. As it is a commuter, it takes a time of about 8.5 seconds to accelerate to 60 Kmph, which is not at all bad for a commuter.

Most of us look for mileage in a bike and Discover doesn’t disappoint us.. According to ARAI IDC (Indian Driving Cycle) it gives unbelievable figure of 89kmpl. They said that under standard conditions it should give around 125kmpl! One can expect it to give a mileage around 75 – 80Kmpl. Other eye catching features of the bike include; powerful suspension, comfortable seating and large wheel base that helps to maintain grip and stability on road. Discover comes with an On Road price tag of 46,000-47,000 while the Ex-Showroom price stands at 41,000.

Pros: Discover has Best mileage in 100cc segment and Sports Great stability, amazing suspension. Electric start, LED taillight, good 5-speed gearbox, maintenance free battery, Comfortable seat and affordable price.

Cons: Some people don’t like styling; also engine could use a bit more power. There were complains about tyre quality, common maintenance problems after few years of riding.

Bajaj Platina DTS-Si 100cc

Bajaj produces another commuter called the Platina DTS-Si. To begin with, Platina has Very good mileage accompanied by a really affordable price. It is a predecessor of Discover 100cc, and while equipment of this bike can’t be compared with progressive technology of Discover, it has its own benefits.

Stylish and sleek looks of Bajaj Platina are very likeable. If you choose platinum silver color with chrome you will always stand apart, even in huge variety of bikes available today. The bike’s specifications are really good with four stroke 99.27cc engine produces which produces 8.2bhp@7500rpm and maximum torque of 8.05Nm@4500rpm. The pick up is respectable, and low end torque is very handy, thanks to the world class ExhausTEC system. Platina is few kilograms lighter then Discover.

Bajaj Platina is capable of reaching 98km/h (however, some people report 93km/h at max, but it solely depends on your weight), and sprint from 0 to 60km/h could be done in 8.5 seconds. In addition there are no excessive vibrations in any rmp’s. Bajaj Platina is equipped with oil indicator, Telescopic front suspension has travel of 125 mm and the rear suspension (SNS) has the longest travel in its class – 100mm. It offers quite a plush ride without sacrificing handling. The commuter gives out a mileage of nearly 80kmpl, and it is very close to Discover’s results. The price for it is only Rs. 33,900 in ex-showroom, and on road price is Rs. 37,215. Platina won the “2007 NDTV Profit Bike India” – bike of the year award, for the 100 cc class.

Pros: Very good mileage, great looks if color is black or silver. Neat ride comfort and best power/torque output in its class.

Cons: Looks are not impressive especially the blue or red base colors, brakes are too soft and there is no electric start. The plastic styling gets scratched easily, because its wrongly placed with maintenance problems as well.

Hero Honda Passion Pro

The next commuter on our list is Hero Honda Passion Pro. This commuter has a Very stylish body with wide variety of color options. It was released as the upgraded design version of basic Hero Honda Passion with a lot of upgraded features. This bike has been introduced for individuals looking for incredibly designed bike with solid performance and mileage figures.

Passion Pro incorporates a lot of styling features like 2-tone colors, body colored rear view mirrors, new multi-reflector headlamp and the new dials in the instrument panel. It comes with 6 variants of multicolor design. Passion plus is also capable of producing just enough power and torque. It can produce a 7.4bhp at 8000 rpm, and peak torque of 7.95Nm was clocked at 5000 rpm. While torque is more than acceptable with engine size of only 97.2 cc, power is on the low side. Because there is not much power, maximum speed of Passion pro is around 85km/h and acceleration isn’t rapid.

Hero Honda Passion pro is equipped with robust 18 inch Dunlop, Srichakra MRF tyres, which provide the rider with adequate grip even on the slippery surfaces. In addition, Passion is very comfortable and stable bike, most likely you will not get back pain even from continuous riding. The tubular double cradle chassis make this bike very dynamic and maneuverable. One can expect to get nearly 65-70kmpl from this motorcycle. The bike is priced 50,000 on Road with an Ex-showroom price of 44,000.

Pros: Best looking bike in 100cc segment, low maintenance, decent reliability, cool colored dials and good resale value. Also it is very comfortable and handling is nice.

Cons: Weak engine and it heats up fast. Mileage may significantly drop while driving at higher speeds of more than 65 Km.

Hero Honda Splendor Plus

Next bike on our list is the Hero Honda Splendor Plus. Best thing about Splendor plus is its comfort and very low maintenance costs. Also, Splendor Plus is one of the largest selling bikes in India. Splendor plus is the improved model of old basic splendor by Hero Honda.

Lets peep in to the specs of Splendor Plus. First of all, styling is very classy because it looks like it came straight from 80’s. Splendor Plus sports front and tail lamps (rectangular) and there are no alloy wheels (okay, there is an option, but they don’t really fit with overall design), and from the sides it isn’t sporty at all. Secondly, engine is the same (97.2cc) as on the Passion plus, so there are no major differences in performance. But because Splendor is much lighter than the Passion, it can achieve 90km/h speeds while achieving a speed of 60Km in just 8.6 secs.

This commuter is comfortable both with regards of handling and seating. The bike is spacious and can easily accommodate two people with all due comforts. Stability could be a bit of concern for this bike because wheelbase is 1230mm and the tyres aren’t too in synchronization with the road. One can even notice a lack in Handling. The commuter sports a Suspension that features standard telescopic fork with hydraulic shock absorbers at the front and the rear; one is swing arm with hydraulic shock absorbers. This bike gives a mileage of 65-75kmpl, and figures are a bit higher than that of Passion Plus. The bike comes at an Ex-Showroom price of 40,000 and an on road price of 45,000.

Pros:

High reliability and low maintenance.

Good resale value

Great comfort level

Cons:

All coloring variants aren’t really that good

Styling is seriously outdated (Retro lovers will love it)

Poor handling and no electric start option.

Yamaha Crux

Yamaha Crux is the next commuter we are going to apprise. The bike is cheaply priced and has a good engine too. Moreover the bike is durable and is very comfortable too. Yamaha’s designers have chosen very conservative approach, and “duplicated” motorcycle designs from the past. Crux has very familiar, big round headlamp and absence of front fairing and the front mudguard is chromed. This bike comes in only two color variants (guess its not a lot to choose from). Crux has got a good four stroke single cylinder 106cc engine that provides the bike with solid 7.6bhp @7500 rpm and peak torque is 7.85Nm @6000 rpm.

Yamaha Crux can run on a Maximum speed of 91-93km/h. Yamaha Crux lacks acceleration and it takes over 9.1 secs to go from 0 to 60Kmph because transmission is very smooth, and gear ratios aren’t good for rapid acceleration. Crux e=was made primarily for comfort rather than power and speed.

This commuter has quite good wheels and tyres (18” 4 PR and 6 PR), and has only multi-spoke rim that is considered one of the best in the industry due to its low maintenance and flexibility. As far as the comfort is concerned, crux scores above average because the seat is quiet big. The bike also has satisfactory handling and also remains stable. Crux has conventional wheelbase of 1260mm and as I already mentioned tyre quality is decent. Mixed mileage is around 60-66kmpl. Price is very affordable – only Rs.32, 000 for ex-showroom and on road price is approximately Rs. 36000.

Pros:

Awesome price

Great reliability

Low maintenance

Easy Riding

Solid engine and reasonable pick up

Good resale value

Cons: It looks like an old moped from 1980’s, and has only two color variants to choose from. Mileage is not very impressive; there are few bikes in 125cc class that are more economical. Lack of technology, no electric start, doesn’t use an efficient braking system.

Mahindra Stallio

Mahindra Stalio is the next bike in the segment that is worth reviewing. The strength of this bike is design and technology it uses. The tag line defines the bike as “World class Italian design, raw power, adrenaline and speed.” Mahindra Stallio has its special sleek, sporty contours and designs from Italy. It is very distinctive from the other bikes, and its multi-reflector headlamp certainly grabs attention. The digital display looks fantastic; it is first bike from the segment that is equipped with such high-end technology.

Mahindra Stallio has got a 106.7cc engine displacement and falls under a partial 110cc class bike but we thought that it would be fun comparing it with 100cc commuters. Surprisingly, power output isn’t that high, just 7.24bhp @ 7500 rpm and maximum torque is 8.0 Nm @ 5500 rpm. There are no exact numbers (well no any numbers for that matter) of performance but based on power and weight ratio one can roughly calculate the results. Power output is lower than on few bikes we already discussed, and also the bike weighs at –126kg (kerb weight). There is no way that this machine could go faster than 85-87km/h even if it had perfect wheels and aerodynamics the speed wouldn’t go till 92 Kmph.

These are somewhat disappointing figures for a 110cc bike. . However, Stallio has advanced telescopic hydraulic-damped front suspension and 5-step adjustable coiled hydraulic-damped rear suspension. In addition, Stallio offers commendable degree of comfort for both rider and passenger while the Fuel efficiency stands at 55-65kmpl (mixed results). One can acquire this bike with cast alloy wheels, self start and fully digital console for around Rs. 44,000 (ex-showroom) and Rs. 49,000 for on road price.

Pros:

Equipped with high-technology

Fully digital display has speedo

Fuel gauge, tachometer, odometer, trip meter and a clock with a 4-year or 80,000 km warranty

Design is pretty stylish and the bike is well balanced

Cons:

No disc brakes,

Low fuel efficiency & weak engine (for 110cc)

Price could be a bit lower.

Ranking:

Design: The most important thing is the Design. Lets assess the rankings as per the design of each of the six commuters.

Based on the above results we can come to the following conclusion;

Bajaj Discover DTS-Si 100cc is most economical bike

Hero Honda Passion Pro has best design and styling, and also is most comfortable

Yamaha Crux is the cheapest bike

Bajaj Platina DTS-Si 100cc is the best performer

Hero Honda Splendor Plus is most reliable and low on operating costs

Bajaj Discover DTS-Si 100cc looks like the overall winner!

This is what final results look like:

Surprisingly, Mahindra Stallio isn’t a really good choice for a commuter, because of two main points – price is really soaring high and mileage is really bad. That’s it! I hope you enjoyed my in-depth analysis of these 6 bikes from 100cc segment! Please leave comments.

Chairman of Bajaj Auto Mr. Rahul Bajaj wants to re-enter in to the segment of scooter in the firm after considering the market revival but according to Rajiv Bajaj the managing director and son of Mr. Rahul Bajaj, presently the firm in concentrating on only bikes. Rajiv Bajaj said, at this time we are completely focusing on global motorcycle market. Mr. Rajiv Bajaj was responding to the comment of his father that it will be good idea to manufacture scooters as it is a reasonably good EBIDTA and grabs 20 percent of market share. The most popular scooter in India is Honda Activa that is in a long waiting period.

When media asked question from Rahul Bajaj regarding manufacturing of scooters once again he directed this question to Rajiv Bajaj, his son, by saying that now his son took all decisions.

The company made an announcement in December 2009 regarding stopping the manufacturing of scooters in the end of 2009-10. In totality, they bring down the curtain on the ‘Hamara Bajaj’ that revolutionized market of two-wheeler in the country. Rajiv Bajaj said at that time the segment of scooters is not selling according to the expectation. So it does not make any sense to make scooters any more. He also said that if we want to be specialist of motorcycle then we can’t make scooters. After that, the market of scooters witnessed a significant growth because of the gearless scooters from Scooter India and Honda Motorcycle. These manufacturers are market leaders of the scooters segment now.

According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Association (SIAM) data, in the period of April-January this fiscal, the market of Indian scooter has witnessed a rise in the sales of around 46.57 percent at 16,97,204 units against 11,57,902 units in comparable last fiscal period.

On the other hand, Bajaj Auto starts focusing their attention on motorbikes and introduced a new range of models of motorbikes including Bajaj Pulsar and Bajaj Discover.
TVS India is planning to launch their all-new Apache RTR 180cc bike for the Indian markets. The TVS Apache RTR 180cc bike is expected to be codenamed as the ‘Menace’ and will also load on the 180-cc engine that features a power rating of 17.3 PS beating the 223-cc Hero Honda Karizma, and also the Bajaj Pulsar 180cc.

TVS Apache RTR 180cc bike will be in the sporty look as of the 3rd generation TVS Apache RTR 160cc, 0-60 km/hour timings, and digital speedometer with top speed.

Features of the TVS Apache RTR 180cc bike include:
- Petal-shaped disc brakes
- Bigger RTR sticker on the tank scoops
- Naked chain cover
- LED tail lamps
- Clip on handlebar
- White back light for the speedometer
- Service and battery indicator
- Feature to test the top speed and 0 - 60kmph timing on the digital display
- RTR 180 logo near the clip-on’s
- Wider 110/80-17 rear tyre

Design:
The bike will retain the basic lines of the current RTR, retaining the basic look of a naked sports bike. But with no front scoop this time. And for a good reason too, the front is now going to house a semi-full faring that will expose part of the engine and give it that naked bike look too.
The bike will have a digital speedometer with top speed, 0-60 timer, trips, and other extra functionality plus stunning looks.

Ride and Handling:
The current RTR handles like a charm with loads of feedback from both the front and rear end. TVS won’t make a mistake in the handling department, although the company is looking to keep the setup to a slightly sportier side. With front and rear disk brakes and a proposed mono-shock we have a new dream bike in development here.
Rumours are that TVS might be going overboard with the weight distribution and balancing and we might have a surprise exhaust this time.

Engine Specifications:
- Displacement: 180cc
- Engine: 4 Stroke, EFi
- Maximum Power: 17.3 Bhp
- Maximum Torque: 16.5
- Gears: 5 Speed
- Clutch: Wet, Multi Plate
- Bore: 0
- Stroke: 0
- Engine Block Material: Iron Block
- Chassis Type: Double Cradle
- Cooling Type: Air Cooling

Dimensions:
- Length: 2020.00 mm
- Width: 730.00 mm
- Height: 1100.00 mm
- Weight: 140.00 kg
- Ground Clearance: 180.00 mm
- Fuel Tank: 16.00 ltrs
- Wheelbase: 1300.00 mm
- Headlamp: 12V 35/35W Halogen HS1, Clear lens with MFR
- Wheel Type: Mag Alloys
- Tubeless: True
- Colors: Yellow, Matt Grey & Red

Expected Price:
75,000 to 1,00,000

Expected Launch:
May 2009

TVS Apache RTR 180cc Bike 'Menace' Photos - (Same As 160cc) :

Like they say, while four wheels move your body, two wheels move your soul. We Indians, have been starved of performance motorcycles, of the affordable kinds I mean. 2010 promised a lot only to usher in a 2011 with even more promises. While 2010 was a dull year for motorcycles by and large, 2011 appears to a lot more rewarding for the industry as well as motorcyclists as a bevy of motorcycles, right from humble economuters to the super sport machines and everything in between are set to compete for the motorcyclist’s purse strings. Team ICB has compiled a list of 15 very exciting motorcycles to watch out for in 2011. Happy Reading!

2011 Yamaha R15

2011 Yamaha R15 Spy Shot

The first fully faired made-in-India motorcycle, the Yamaha R15 resurrected Yamaha India Motor from the brink and along with than gave Indian motorcycle enthusiasts a wonderfully forgiving, performance motorcycle on which they could commute on the weekdays and hit the track on the weekends. Yamaha, in a further testament to it’s commitment to improving the general biking scene in the country even organized the one make R15 racing series and launched a slew of factory supported upgrades to the R15.

In the face of the competition hotting up, Yamaha simply cannot rest on it’s laurels and hence, time to say howdy to the 2011 Yamaha R15. Touted to be the Yamaha R15 that embodies most of the changes the existing R15 owners would have liked in the first place, the 2011 R15 will come with split seats, redesigned rear end, replete with broader tires and few other changes. The engine department might see an extra pony or two making it’s presence felt. Expected launch is in the period between January and February 2011 at a price not too different from that of the the existing R15.

2011 Yamaha FZ225

2011 Yamaha-Scorpio-Z-225

The Yamaha FZ16 goes around corners like a peach with that big 140 section rear serving only to encourage more such peg scraping, knee down antics. But when the going got straighter, the Fz16 rider felt an abject lack of power on the rapider side of 80 kph. With the Karizma-R still doing decent numbers along with the Bajaj Pulsar 220S, a bigger lump between the legs(no puns intended) is just what the doctor ordered for FZ16 riders.

So, Yamaha could shoehorn the 225cc, 18 Bhp motor of the Yamaha Scorpio and give the much needed boost the FZ16 rightly deserves. If this indeed does materialize, it would certainly make the FZ one fun bike to own. For now, this story remains just that, a story. But given the few rumblings we’ve been hearing from Faridabad, Yamaha might just pull off a coup in 2011. Time to keep the antennas attuned to Yes! Yamaha.

2011 Hyosung ST7

2011 Hyosung ST7

The erstwhile Kinetic Engineering Limited brought in a limited number the Hyosung Aquila 250s and managed to sell the first shipload like hot cakes off a steaming oven. Then came in the second equally quick selling shipload curiously after which Kinetic simply stopped importing more Aquilas, thus shattering many a teen’s dream of owning this long, low V-Twin Cruiser.

Pune based Kinetic is defunct now and it has taken another firm from the same city, called Garware, of the sunfilm fame, to tie up with Hyosung and bring the 700cc Hyosung ST7 Cruiser to India in CKD guise. You get a bucket load of chrome, a powerful and torquey 678.2cc V-Twin engine that produces 62 Bhp of sh0ve and 63 Nm of twist.

All this power and torque can leave the Harleys far behind when it comes to straight line performance and at a price of INR 6-7 Lakhs, you simply cannot complain. This motorcycle should be launched anytime now as the original launch period of Diwali 2010 had been postponed to the new year.

2011 Hyosung GT650

2011 Hyosung GT650

Kinetic reprised the Aquila story with the Comet GT250 and the GT250 goes out for a more powerful 650cc offering going by the name, the Hyosung GT650. This Korean middleweight might not be a race-to-the-redline 600 when it comes to the performance stakes, but with 79 Bhp of max power from it’s 650cc Suzuki SV650 derived four stroke, 8 valve, DOHC V-Twin lump, the GT650 will more than deliver when it comes to a solid kick in the pants..

As with the ST7 Cruiser, Garware Motors has chosen to play the value quotient with the generously sized GT650 as well, as the anticipated price tag is INR 5 Lakh. We’re expecting a significant chunk of the prospective Ninja250R crowd to migrate to the GT650 if Garware manages to retain the promised price points. The GT650 could launch any time now and if you’re in the market for a good 600, you might as well put your monies on the GT650.

2011 Kawasaki Ninja 650R

2011 Kawasaki Ninja 650R

Kawasaki India Motor has set up an assembly unit in Bajaj Auto’s Chakan plant and the 2011 Kawasaki Ninja 650R could be the first motorcycle to get assembled at the spanking new facility. The 650cc parallel twin, though not being a track bred tool to hit the race track every weekend, would just be the perfect tourer to hit the rapidly improving Indian road infrastructure.

And the 650R can do a fair bit of bad road riding too as the motorcycle is a light enough tool to be hustled along ruts without the bodywork screaming, “give me a break”. You get 70 horses and 66 Nm of twist to play with on the 650R and this, allied to a price of INR 5-6 Lakh, could just prove to the proverbial cat set on the pigeons(read Hyosung GT650). What say, Bajaj?

2011 Kawasaki Ninja ZX10R

2011 Kawasaki Ninja ZX10R

The 2011 Kawasaki Ninja ZX10R has had it’s fair share of starting problems with an early pre-sale recall for bouncy valves in the trial sale versions. The boffins at Kawasaki Heavy Engineering have devised a fix to cure just this and the good news about all this is the fact that the original 197 Bhp peak output of the Kawasaki Ninja ZX10R is set to remain. 197 Bhp on two wheels is a scary prospect.

Even more so on the bucaneering Kawasaki ZX10R, which has always been known as a real meanie when it comes to it’s unforgiving power delivery and road manners. The BMW S1000RR might have just met it’s match when the most powerful ZX10R ever hits Indian roads, and gives Indian SBK enthusiasts a taste of what the Green magic is all about. Expect to pay about INR 11-12 Lakhs for the 2011 Kawasaki ZX10R, when it gets launched in India sometime this summer.

2011 Harley Davidson SuperLow

2011 Harley Davidson Sportster SuperLow 883

You can perhaps buy the Hyosung ST7 which will go faster and handle better than the SuperLow 883, and might even cost lesser or, is it the same? But there is something that the Korean cruiser simply can’t hold a candle to. The aura of the Harley Davidson badge on the tank or is it the legendary potato-potato-potato.

The cheapest Harley Davidson yet, the SuperLow 883 is Harley Davidson India’s maiden attempt at assembling Harleys in the sub continent and along with that, it hopes to achieve the larger goal of putting more Indian riders on Harley Davidson motorcycles.

The 2011 Harley Davidson SuperLow comes in as a CKD kit and it’s assembly at Harley’s spanking new Gurgaon plant would result in the SuperLow 883 retailing for an ex-showroom INR 5.5 Lakhs. That’s the price at which urban India buys it’s diesel hatchbacks at, and there, that exactly gives the SuperLow a killer chance to sell well with the great Indian middle class finally being able to afford Harleys.

2011 Harley Davidson Iron 883

2011 Harley Davidson Sportster Iron 883

The SuperLow 883 might be cheapest Harley Davidson you could buy in India but I’d put my monies on the Iron 883, for, it looks the classiest amongst all the Sportster Harleys on offer. And who’d want to be seen on the cheapest girly Harley in town while one more Lakh could get you gorgeous looks and that all important street cred among your motorcycling mates.

The Harley Davidson Iron 883 that runs on the tried and tested 883cc sportster engine, will sell for INR 6.5 Lakhs, Ex-showroom India and that would be the primary selling factor. The bookings for this baby opened right when 2010 rolled into 2011 and if you want to get one of these, you should head to your nearest Harley dealer, who’ll even help you find finance for your favourite Harley.

2011 Honda CBR250R

2011 Honda CBR250R

Finally, Honda thinks that it is just the right time to introduce to Indian motorcyclists, the pleasure of riding sporty 250cc motorcycles and thence, the 2011 Honda CBR250R. The motorcycle, powered by a liquid cooled, four valve, DOHC 250cc single would be the logical progression for all those still smitten by the Unicorns super smooth 150cc engine.

Promising a much more relaxed riding position when compared to the R15, the 2011 Honda CBR250R is designed to be the perfect Jekyl and Hyde bike. Honda, being a game changer that it has always been, will also bring in the ABS version of the CBR250R. This move, might really do a lot for improving motorcycle safety as it could kickstart the mad scramble amongst other motorcycle manufacturers to usher in the ABS revolution to Indian motorcycling.

Any which ways, deliveries of the 2011 Honda CBR250R will begin starting from April and Honda has already started accepting bookings through it’s dealerships. The non ABS version of the 2011 Honda CBR250R will cost INR 1.5 Lakh while the ABS version would be dearer by a further INR 30,000.

2011 Bajaj KTM 200

2011 KTM-Bajaj 200

Originally touted to come with a 125cc heart at a price tag of close to INR 1.2 Lakhs, Bajaj Auto suddenly realized the fruitlessness of it all. Yes, the Bajaj-KTM 125, manufactured at Bajaj’s Chakan plant and exported to mature motorcycle markets across the world is indeed a technological showcase of how far Bajaj Auto has advanced in it’s motorcycle making prowess.

But expecting the customer to shell out more than a Lakh for what essentially is a 125cc, 15 Bhp motorcycle bike doesn’t make for sound business sense. Therefore, the Bajaj KTM 125 is undergoing a transformation into a 20cc machine, courtesy the new 200cc liquid cooled, four stroke mill that Bajaj and KTM are jointly developing.

With the price remaining unchanged, the Bajaj KTM 200 looks definitely like a terrific deal as all other bits on the Bajaj KTM 200 are, in one phrase, top of the line. Expect this motorcycle to hit Bajaj dealers in winter 2011 and we still think Bajaj should pre-pone that launch date of theirs.

2011 Bajaj Pulsar 250

2011 Bajaj Pulsar 250 Render

The tag of the fastest Indian is under threat as home boy Mahindra readies up the Mojo 300. Not wanting to fade out, Bajaj Auto Limited will mount a counter attack with the biggest of Bajaj’s recent branding successes, the Pulsar platform. The Bajaj Pulsar 250 will feature a four valve, Liquid cooled single cylinder, four stroke item to take on the likes of the Mahindra Mojo 300 and the Honda CBR250R.

Bajaj, being Bajaj is expected to play the value card quite prominently by endowing the Bajaj Pulsar 250 with class leading power and torque figures at a price that will simply make the competition run for cover. On the features front too, Bajaj might borrow some stuff from KTM to give the Pulsar 250 that “premium” feel. Expect a feature packed, sharply styled Bajaj Pulsar 250 sometime in the middle of this year.

2011 Mahindra Mojo 300

2011 Mahindra Mojo 300

When Anand Mahindra tweeted that something big is brewing at Mahindra Two Wheelers, few would have imagined a 300cc motorcycle launch, from a company, that is essentially the rebranded, albeit a well managed Kinetic Engineering Limited. In what began life as the stillborn Malaguti MR250, that Mahindra owned Engines Engineering developed for Italian scooter maker Malaguti, the Mojo 300 has all the trappings of a super seller with a 26 Bhp peak power allied to a Italian bred taut handling chassis.

In other words, the Mahindra Mojo is essentially an Italian supermoto and if Mahindra manages to price the Mojo at a price close to INR 1.5 Lakhs rather than the suggested INR 1.75 Lakhs, the Mojo may just put the Mojo right back into Mahindra Two Wheelers’ sales charts. The Mahindra Mojo will begin sales in the first quarter of 2011 and we’re still hoping that Mahindra Two Wheelers’ marketing folks replace that very cheesy sounding Mojo moniker with something a little more palatable.

2011 Ducati Diavel

2011 Ducati Diavel

For the cruiser aficionados who don’t want to leave the Ducatista brotherhood, here comes the 2011 Ducati Diavel power cruiser. Powering the Diavel is the Testastretta 11° engine good for 162 Bhp and tree stump pulling 127.5Nm of torque. Er, that’s an SBK motor that Ducati has managed to tune into a torque lump for the arm socket wrenching, tyre shredding grunt that folks riding muscle cruisers, more so a Ducati, will come to expect.

This, plus ravishing looks only the Italians can sculpt and handling honed in the Italian alps, the Diavel is one mean muscle cruiser. So, there, a power cruiser if you’re back is too still to get back onto your other Ducati is what the Diavel is all about. Yes, this baby is making it’s way into the Indian premium motorcycle market in April, 2011 and you can bring one home upwards of INR 20 Lakhs. Expensive eh! When have Ducatis been a cheap mode of getting from one place to another?

BMW S1000RR

2011 BMW S1000RR

Very quietly, BMW Motorrad has just started initial deliveries of the award winning, segment topping BMW S1000RR superbike in major Indian cities. One such example was delivered to a BMW aficionado in Bangalore who was all grins when asked about how the BMW S1000RR was when compared to other similar speced SBKs.

The BMW S1000RR is a very special motorcycle for BMW Motorrad, as this is one motorcycle that BMW Motorrad focused all it’s energies on getting right to achieve sales success in the highly competitive 1000cc segment of the Superbike territory, which hitherto has been dominated by the Jap big four.

Launched in 2009, as one of the most powerful SBKs on sale, the BMW S1000RR is powered a 999cc inline four screamer producing 193 Bhp at the crank for a kerb weight of 183 Kilos. Yes, that is some massive power and for this very reason, you’ve got to be up to scratch to handle this insanely powerful monster. On sale right now through BMW car dealers at an ex-showroom price close to INR 22 Lakhs.

BMW R1200GS

2011 BMW R1200GS

Just as a Bangalorean walked away with the keys of the first officially sold BMW S1000RR, a motorcyclist from Pune laid his hands on the BMW R1200GS. BMW is renowned for making great touring machines and Indian even got a sample of the BMW Funduro 650, when Hero Motors launched it way back in the noughties. The BMW R1200GS is an extremely popular touring machine that has been made iconic with actor Ewan McGregor’s road trip titled Long Way Down.

Topping the touring bike charts for many years now, the R1200GS features a 1200cc Boxer Twin whose 2010 version has DOHC cams to deliver a maximum power of 110 Bhp and maximum torque of 120 Nm. Now, that explains why the BMW R1200GS is one machine the tourers worship and adore. Meanwhile, the Indian deliveries of this iconic motorcycle have already begun and you can buy one for yourself for about INR 20 Lakhs, ex-showroom.

Happy Motorcycling and yes, put that lid on every time you swing your leg across the saddle.

Hi, I am Navjot Singh from Ludhiana (Punjab) doing B.Tech in computers. From childhood I have been very passionate about bikes and cars. I used to drive a 2006 Bajaj Discover 125cc till 2009 but now in 2010 I bought a new bike BAJAJ PULSAR 220F. This time my father set me break free to buy any bike except Ninja (2.90 lacks for 250 cc !!!)

My shortlist was : -

1. Yamaha YZF-R15

2. Bajaj Pulsar 220

After checking all feasibility of needs I came to conclusion that Pulsar 220 is the bike that fits my need.

Reason - My daily driving kms are not fixed. I used to go on my college bus with my friends as it is about about 55 kms from my home. But I found it very difficult to go on a bus as a biker. So from my 20 day college in a month I manage approx 10 days to go to college on my bike, so my main driving is highway driving. I read a lot of forums, contact many people and found P220 is better option than R15 on highways. But still i requested a quote from Bajaj and Yamaha dealer near my house and took their permission for a 30 km test drive without pillion (Rs. 100 fuel from my side they mention).

After this test my reaction were : -

Looks - Sitting on R15 is a amazing feeling, feels a very big bike, very sporty seating, all new atmosphere (like international bikes), soft handle grips and speedometers are like wow.. !! From front and side its a big bike but rear is very disappointing, even the tires are very thin and spoil overall bulky look of the bike.

On the other side Pulsar welcomes you with same old atmosphere like any other Pulsar but here in 220 you find different style speedo with sporty digits, fairing adding big bike feeling, sporty sitting and quality is good. This is also a big bike with broad tyres. Handsome looks.

Power - Obviously Pulsar 220 is more powerful but R15 is no less, past approx 6000 rpm and power of R15 feels like double, but where is the low end torque?? On highways under little hard braking which is very common in Indian road conditions R15 demands change of gears. e.g. I was driving R15 at 85 kmph (6th gear) under braking up to 55 kmph i needed to shift into 4th gear for proper pull!! Here I mention Proper pull!!!

Now in P220 u need not to shift down even if same above condition happens. Pulsar 220′s low end and mid range is fantastic. One thing I clearly mention P220 above 8500 rpm until redline i.e 10,000 rpm is noisy, vibrates and feels uncomfortable unlike R15 which is very smooth until its redline due to fuel injected system. Inspite of this, one can easily cruise at 100- 120 kmph on Pulsar 220 without any stress for hours. So, in terms of price and overall benefits I choose pulsar 220 over R15.

About Pulsar 220F – Bajaj recently launched the Pulsar 220 DTSi in 2009 with biggest carburetor used in any Indian bike to insure proper performance like fuel injected Pulsar 220 and proper fuel efficiency. In 2010, Bajaj again modified Pulsar 220 DTSi with minor changes as I heard from probiking guys that are little carburetter and fairing improvements and now renamed as Pulsar 220F , here ‘F’ stands for fairing as Pulsar 220 now also comes in ‘S’ model. F can be also used as Fastest Indian.

Some Goodies of Pulsar 220 : -

1. Even at these 3 digit speeds Pulsar 220 feels like cream. Any gear any speed and it goes like anything.

2. Very less affect of cross winds. Awesomely stable on highways.

3. Speedometer shows battery low, engine oil low, engine over heat, oil cooler choke indicators. Dual trip meters and side stand indicators are good feature.

4. Powerful Headlights and nice spread. Pure white not yellowish like other bikes including R15 and fazer.

5. Its wider IRC soft compound tubeless tyres (No MRF in 220F) provide an excellent road grip.

6. 3D decals looks very appealing.

7. Suspensions are simply superb with thicker front telescopic forks which doesn’t let rider to be unstable during hard braking and twin 5- way adjustable nitrox shock absorbers at rear inspire superb confidence on long drives.

8. Silencer with muffler for proper cooling and safety.

9. Backlit switches looks cool and are of good quality. Self canceling indicates are boon

10. Auto coke is very responsive and helps easy cold starting .

My Views : -

Performance – Performance of 220 is very very good. Very easy to ride. 100 km/h can be easily attained very quickly and smoothly. 120- 130 km/h speed comes early than one could expert from a 220 cc bike. Oil cooler is always there to ensure engine oil is never get too hot on long drives to ensure proper performance even at continuous high speeds!

Oil cooler radiator - Twist the accelerator at any speed and you could feel the thrust of 220 cc engine, neat.

Braking - Perfect brakes for perfect bike. Front disc brake equipped with 260mm Disc which did its duty very well, Rear 220 mm disc is always there to satsfy every need of bracking. One down thing about rear brake is that its brake paddle is little hard to operate. Comes in play after long press.

Tyres - IRC manufactured Soft and Sticky tyres provide excellent grip on highways and city. Inspire full confidence at high speeds on dry and wet roads. Fully Satisfied. Pulsar 220F now comes with IRC tyres and not with MRF Zappers. When asked why to probiking guy, he said these are more soft and sticky than Zappers to provide extra grip at high speeds.

Suspension - Pulsar 220 is set to Firm (stiff) side to ensure confidence inspiring drive on highways. Small pot holes can never be felt. Big holes on roads never make bike unstable.

Experience with tyres and Suspension - We all know All National Highways are beings made 6 lane in all over India. On NH1 same project is going on which i used to go to my college. Once when driving at about 70 km/h i just saw a big brick like block in front of me and about 7 cm in height which accidentally fallen on road and i cant see that piece due to car in front of me. But at that speed due to soft compound tyres and ultra good suspension nothing wrong happen !! THis bike pass that block without any drama, phew!

Headlights – First ever two wheeler which headlights really impresses me. Very bright and very nice spread. Light is actually purely white not a yellowish like other headlight. 55w Lights are very good on highway and city.

Fuel Efficiency – Most Important for Some people: On highways if driven under 80 km/h gently one can easily get 55km/h . Max average achieve till now is 52 kmpl with 40% city and 60% highway (Achieve during first 1000 kms) with max speed of 65km/h. Worst is 41 kmpl when drive like crazy for continuous 110kms (126km/h max and constant at 80km/h +) . For this kind of power, I am satisfied with it!

Maintenance - This bike is not a commuter, it is a sport category bike and it needs regular maintenance. Even Bajaj open different Probking showrooms for high performance bikes (ninja, pulsar 220 and avenger 220) . Different crew for these bikes.

1. Scheduled servicing is very important.

2. Requires good 4T 20w50 engine oil . I use Valvoline 4t Premium. Always use 20w50 4t oil for this bike as recommended by company. Bajaj Dtsi 10000 oil is also very good.

3. Air filter needs to be cleaned very frequently because of pollution and dust. I do it every 500 to 600 kilometers for good fuel economy and full performance.

4. Drive chain requires cleaning and lubrication frequently for long life of chain. Reduce noise and vast increase in performance. I use SAE-90 oil to lubricate it. Chain spray is bit costly so when needed got it from Bajaj A.S.S.

Many people say it doesn’t have kick bla bla… I have a answer for them. Pulsar 220 (also 180) comes with a reserve power system that even if your battery is gone you have little reserve power for 3 self starts. No car in this world has a kick!

PROS

No large investment or major parts replacement required in my bike. Everything is present.

Very low maintenance cost if drive sensibly and gently.

CONS

Bajaj should put fairing more neatly and more properly it vibrates (luckily without any irritating sound) at speeds above 70 kmph.

Side mirrors are very pathetic, one has to bend arm inwards to see behind. Mirrors vibrate a lot reduce clarity of rear objects. Bajaj should treat it with priority as they are safety features.

I hope you find my bike review useful and may it be useful for buying it. I would love to hear your comments, arguments, suggestions, etc.

Take care, Drive safe.

God Bless You.
