2012 Sportster® Models: Personalization and Power

The six 2012 Harley-Davidson® Sportster® models range from the affordable Dark CustomTM roadster-inspired Iron 883TM motorcycle to the track-inspired performance of the XR1200XTM bike. Each Sportster® model offers the heartbeat of an authentic American V-Twin engine and pace-setting style and performance.

Back for its first full year of production is the Sportster® 1200 Custom bike, the motorcycle that introduced the Web-based H-D1TM Bike Builder factory customization process. Using Bike Builder, Customers can personalize their 1200 Custom motorcycle with the seat, handlebar, foot control, wheel, security, paint, and engine finish options of their choice, which are then installed right at the Factory. Even more Retailer-installed accessories can be added, and viewed, on the Bike Builder site. The Customer can then print out a description of their bike and bring it to a Harley-Davidson® Retailer where they can review the motorcycle with trained staff, select additional accessories to be installed by the Retailer to further customize the motorcycle, and then place an order. Motorcycles come in many different styles and it is important to match the bike to your riding style and expectations. Harley Davidson is known more for their cruiser and custom style bikes than for sport bikes, even though the sportster under the sport bike category to some degree. If you have decided that a Harley Davidson is your motorcycle of choice it is time to consider the various Harley models available. Here are a few styles when selecting either a new or used bike :

1. . If you are planning to take long trips this style of bike is for you. When picking out a touring bike weight is something to consider. Harley touring bikes include the classically styled Road Kings and the fully equipped “Glides”, such us the road Glides and Ultra Glide. These bikes fall under Harley’s FL designation with the exception of the heritage and fat boy.

2. . While not an official category of motorcycle with Harley Davidson, these bikes are similar to touring bikes due to their big FL style front ends though they are classed as softails. While not as heavy as full touring bikes these bikes are still heavy are not for the beginning rider.

3. . These bikes are unique to Harley Davidson and have the look of a rigid mount bike from the early days. Softails incorporate a hidden shock to provide rear suspension and are very popular as a daily rider or as the foundation of a Harley custom. These bikes are lighter in weight than their touring and cruiser brothers.

4. . Also known as a “rubber mount” the Dyna models has a dual shock rear suspension like the touring bikes but a lighter front end share with both the Softails and Sportsters. Unlike these other the Dyna has a rubber mounted engine to reduce engine vibration. Dynas come with either a wide-glide or sportier narrow-glide front end. Some consider the Dyna a street-class bike.

5. . Harley Davidson’s core sport bike model has long been the Sportster or “XL” model. These bikes have a smaller engine and frame design and are lightest bikes offered by the motor company. Long considered a great bike for beginners or smaller individuals (such as lady riders) these bikes are by no means any less of a true Harley than their big brothers. Sportster are the only Harley offered in two engine sizes, the 883 and 1200.

6. . Harley Davidson’s newest model is the V-Rod. Very different than any of the other model, this bike combine the power and style of an imported sport bike while maintaining stretched out forward controls that are uniquely Harley.

7. . While not exactly a Harley, these sport bikes are American made and owned/ sold through Harley Davidson. A true sport bike looks and styling like an import sport bike the buell is powered by an American V-Twin engine. This is a great all-around bike for daily riding and carving up a canyon road.

The company's history dates back to 1901 when 21 year old William S. Harley introduced a plan for the manufacture of a small engine that could displace 7.07 cubic inches (116 cc) with four-inch flywheels that could operate on the pedal-bicycle frame. By 1903 the cycle was completed with the help of the Davidson brothers although the cycle did not meet the best standards to undo competition.

The Harley-Davidson company products are mainly motorcycles. Since the company prefers to reserve its image as American made, it does outsourcing but the final product is assembled in the United States. The products are usually durable consumer goods, although they produce both normal and luxury goods. Normal goods produced include some series that are specifically made for general policing and military expeditions while luxury goods are special bikes made for fun purposes like track racing.

The responsiveness of consumers to a price change is measured by the product's price elasticity of demand.  Some products are highly responsive to price changes.  Modest price changes cause very large changes in the quantity purchased.  Economists say that the demand for such products if relatively elastic or simply elastic. For other products Substantial price changes caused only small changes in the amount purchased.  The demand for such products is relatively inelastic or simply inelastic.  (p. 356)

Harley-Davidson's products are relatively price elastic. This is due to the fact that there exist a relatively competitive market with close substitutes from companies like Honda and Suzuki. Harley-Davidson has an overall market share of around 22 %( 2002 estimates) but the American market share is as follows:

To improve on market share every company uses its own strategy. But in any industry there are four core elements of marketing strategy. These four elements are strategies that involve the product, pricing, promotion, and distribution. In all these areas the Harley-Davidson has formulated the best mix that suits their company.

This has included large investments in their dealers, moderate pricing, the use of female images to advertise in order to lure in many more female riders since only 7%of riders are females.

Just like in any other industry or market the treatment of workers and worker rights are very crucial. Although the Harley-Davidsons' have had a good workers profile they have had intermittent negative profiles with their unionisable workers and their unions. The most significant dispute was in early this year where a workers strike led to a two-week disruption of national production.

"Like many other unionized manufacturers, Harley-Davidson's prior labor-management relations can be characterized as usually cordial, but generally adversarial. We made several attempts in the late 1970s and throughout the '80s to turn this around. But the normal stress of business, coupled with wariness on both sides, always seemed to conspire to upset our initiatives. In the mid-1990s, however, the senior management of Harley-Davidson and the presidents of the two internationals, the IAM and PACE, go together for discussions on how to make a sea change in our relations. The outcome of these important discussions was a formal partnering agreement between Harley-Davidson management and our union leaders, which outlined a way of working together that is mutually beneficial. Partnering has fundamentally changed the way we do business. It's made Harley-Davidson a better place to work and, in the process, it's made our business more successful than ever". The Harley –Davidson is a publicly traded at the New York stock exchange. As such the company has defied great odds like surviving the great depression of 1929-1935 as well as stiff competition from Japanese competition. This has however prompted the company to outsource the production of smaller parts to countries like china in order to reduce operational costs.

However since the Harley-Davidson prefers to be labeled the American icon it has reserved the final assembly to be done on American soil.

If you have been to Vegas, or seen any of the thousands of movies set in Vegas, then you have probably seen the mammoth Harley Davidson that sticks out of the front of the Hard Rock Café. Believe it or not, in true Harley Davidson style, this motorcycle would actually be operational if there was a Paul Bunyan alive to ride it.

If you know the history of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle’s creation, you would understand why its creators, who believed anything was possible, would not have it any other way. Harley Davidson was born when two 21 year old Milwaukee boys decided it was too much work to ride a pedal powered bike up and down the hills of Milwaukee in 1901.

It took one failed effort, and a lot of work, but finally William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson (hence the brand name) with the help of Davidson’s older brother and an engineer down the street created the first fully motored bicycle that became the first Harley to ever grace the street of America. Although the bike frame was thin and sheet metals as all bicycles were at the time, and the engine weighed 28 pounds, it was successfully able to carry the boys up the hills and so an American staple was born.

Since then the bike has only soared in popularity and been both a standard of the hard rock life and a symbol of manhood. Not only has the owning a Harley been a class distinction among motorcyclists, but now the logo itself has spread like wildfire as Harley Davidson makes about 5% of its annual revenue from the sale of items inscribed with the logo. There simply is no other motorcycle that can compete with the Harley, on the road or in people’s hearts.

your oil filter is on the front of the motor like the newer bikes. the oil filter was located at the back of the bike under the transmission on the FLH (baggers) for that year.

113 inch motor is going to be much taller because of the longer stroke. If it will sit on the motor mount plates under the backbone, then you'll be ok. But, you won't be able to run the stock gas tanks, I'm pretty sure. They'll sit too low. You'll have to change to something that sits completely above the backbone.
