Do I Need A Trailer For My Camping Trip - Discover The Pros And Cons

The best solution to not having enough space in your car for your camping trip is to purchase a trailer. Many trailers are often referred to as camping trailers now. The market has many trailers and come in all different guises such as light metal trailers with fabric covers to hard-top plastic covers or the most common a drop down tailgate. This makes it easier to load heavier items such as your tent and gas bottle.

If you go a bit more upmarket you can get the traditional British wooden-sided trailer. This variation has a metal frame with a plywood floor and timber boards for both sides. These are very solid and well put together and really do last a lifetime. Be aware though that these trailers do need regular maintenance.

You should not be one of those culprits who leaves there trailer rusting away in the front garden, just to give it an airing once a year for the family vacation. If you try and tow a trailer which is rusty and badly maintained then you guaranteed to get you vacation off to a bad start and no doubt end up on the side of the road.

If you are a camper who goes camping by way of a motorcycle then as long as the motorcycle has an engine capacity of over 125cc you can by law tow a trailer. Please note though that the maximum weight is 150kg and the overall width of the trailer cannot exceed one metre and the distance between the back wheel and back axle and the back of the trailer in total cannot exceed 2.5 metres.

One consideration to be aware of before you go off and purchase a trailer is that you are limited to your speed on the motorway to 60mph and that most campsites will charge you extra for a trailer. Most importantly you will need to get a tow-bar fitted. So if you buy a trailer and tow-bar, with labour and fitting you could be talking about an easy seven hundred British pounds or a thousand American dollars for the benefit. It is worth exploring roof boxes as these are often an overlooked alternative to the trailer. Although not as versatile you can pack a lot of your camping gear in them and it can work out at half the price of a trailer with parts and without any extra cost when you get to the campsite.

Question by BIGDOGG: Best motorcycle/bike for a big man? Bigguns come hither!? I am a 6'1, 300 lb man who has just completed MSF basic rider course and am now looking to buy my first bike (cruiser/chopper type) to save $ on gas. I would like to spend $ 2500-3000 or less on something that easily handles city/highway riding for 300-470 lbs (with wife), and possibly more if I add a small trailer later on (for camping trips 3 hours away). Year/make/model are really of little (no) issue. Comfort and "ride-ability" are of most importance, followed by price and available aftermarket options. Just wanted to get some input from the more experienced, "density challenged" folks like myself! Any help would be much appreciated, and thanks for your time. Best answer:

Honda goldwing .... Harley Davidson (although very expensive and probably out of the price range quoted)

Listen to Harley Mike. Your weight- than adding the another hundred or more for your wife – is putting a lot of strain on a motor, so you have to have a motor that can take it. I would not go with anything under 1000 cc – and I doubt seriously you will find anything in great shape in the price range you are looking- that hasn’t been ridden for a while. No Harely at all. If you go Harley, you are looking for something of 1340 cc or bigger (the Sportster is not for you). For that, you are looking to spend from 7500 if you buy it privately or at last 10k from a dealer.

Many of the metric dealers are selling bikes with very low financing charges. Even with lousy credit, you can get a bike (even a Harley) financed with easy to make payments.

Aftermarket- the best bet is still a Harley. My husband and I have both bought used Harleys with very low miles and were able to sell them for close to what we paid for them. I paid 10.5 K, sold it for 7.5K after riding the tar out of it for four years.Could have gotten more, but I didn’t want to wait.

Nothing in that price range can remotely suit your needs unless you happen to find a good bike on the used market. HOwever buyer beware when swimming in the used market oceans….Lots and lots of deals out there but make sure the deal is working for you and not the seller…….If you want new manufacturer product then you will have to up the pot by 10000 minimum…..that would get you a big Kawasaki/Suzuki or Yamaha…If you want a big Honda/Polaris or HD then you have to go up in the high teens or lw 20,000. After that it is whatever your wallet can bear…….I really think that your size would be an issue with BMW and/or Moto Gzzzi and they are not a very easily repaired bike should you live far from any metropolitan area….Parts and skilled mechanics to work on these less popular ( not less quality) are hard to come by in the hinterlands….ALso the Tiumph 2300CC and or the Boss Hog, both suitable for a man your size , aare diffcult to maintain when the inevitable happens….Unless you are near a major metroplitan area….Honda GOld Wings and Hartley Davisons as well as the big Kawa/suzuki and Yamaha are all easily maintained and very easy to find mechanics trained in their maintenance at just aobut every corner on main street….All of the bikes I mentioned are of high quality but all of them will need maintenance at some time in their lives so keep this in mind

Harley is the official bike of fat people. Get one of those and you will fit right in.

You’ll need a bike with large enough displacement to handle the kind of loads you are talking about. At least 1000cc or larger. The Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 has been made since 1987 and can be had within your price range.

Another bike that fits that category is the Honda Shadow 1100

The Yamaha Virago 1100 can also be had for $ 3k.

One more choice is the Suzuki Intruder 1400. However they seem to hold their value more than the other brands.

On your budget you could probably get an older Honda Goldwing or a Kawasaki Vulcan 1500. Also a Yamaha Venture would be a good choice. All of these bikes could handle your needs. Good Luck.,

for that money the only new bike you can really get that I know of would be a Honda Rebel however there are others but i think they would be small or sports bikes not what you are looking for really. I would get a used bike for the money maybe on ebay? you could try it anyways. Cruiser’s will work out nicely for you but your going to want a bigger bike like a Kawasaki vulcan good luck!

I was going to say “get yourself a hog” for class and the pure pleasure of owning one but I don’t think you can find a good one in your price range. Honda always makes a quality product and I think I would suggest, if not a Harley then you gotta go with Honda.

  • ♥Martini Shake♥

Something big and beefy like a Vulcan or a Roadstar would be perfect for you….

    PS. Goldwings are so stereotypical…

This review is from: 60″ x 20″ Folding Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Luggage Rack Cart Hand Dolly Camping RV with Wheels

This Cargo Carrier works just as planned. After opening the box I didn’t find any instructions but it is fairly easy to put together. Just spread all the parts out and think about how it is going to mount and fold up. The folding handle was the most difficult. Not that it was difficult but it isn’t clear how it mounts and folds up. I just picked one side, attached the two short steel straps and attached the handle to that. It works fine but I’m not sure if that was the designed method? I purchased it mainly to attach to the back of my riding lawn mower. Now I have a rack to carry trash cans, tools, fallin branch’s and even a platform for weight when I plow the driveway. And the best part is I can still use it on my truck or jeep. It is easy to pull around as the wheels roll great! The only modification I made was to shorten the 2″ square tubing that slides into the receiver. It was very long and made it stick way out beyond my bumber. I did have to drill another hole for the hitch pin. I just kept the tube long enough for it to still fold up. The only other suggestion I would have is to use lock tight on the bolts once you are certain it is correctly put together. I know on long road trips bolts tend to loosen off and because it sets down below your tailgate you can’t visually see it while driving. Just an extra security measure! All in all it works great!

This review is from: 60″ x 20″ Folding Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Luggage Rack Cart Hand Dolly Camping RV with Wheels

This cargo-carrier-slash-luggage-cart is awesome! It is very good quality and it is durable. I drove thousands of miles with it in the cold, ice, and snow. The wheels are very good quality and are not flimsy. The size is very generous. I carried a minifridge, tents, 18 gallon plastic tubs, and a 46″ TV on it. I also plan to haul some trash to the dump with it, especially since it has wheels.

So here is why I gave it four stars instead of five: The instructions stink! It doesn’t tell you how to hitch it to the truck, nor how to install the handle. Luckily, the company I bought it from had some very good pictures and close-ups on how it looks when installed to the hitch. Because this cart can fold up, the hitch mount is in two pieces. You have to switch the pieces to make the different positions. It’s not too hard to figure out, but it would have made the process a lot easier if the box came with good instructions. Also, the handle was a pain to figure out. See, the handle is supposed to be able to fold flat. There are a bunch of weird nuts and bolts Ive never seen before that you must use to make the handle work properly. Unfortunately, there were no pictures of that! I had to sit there and try different configurations to get it to work. Im not even sure if its correct, but there doesn’t seem to be another way to get everything on AND have the handle work. I think I had one lone nut leftover. But I can’t remember. It does work now and I love it.

I have a suggestion for this product. I originally thought I would just need one lock for the hitch. Wrong! If you want to lock this thing completely, you need THREE LOCKS. One for the hitch receiver, one to lock the hitch to the “knuckle”, and one to lock the basket to the “knuckle.” Just bring the pin they give you to the store and match it up to a lock.

Also, this basket works great on a Jeep Wrangler! WITH the spare tire on, it STILL FOLDS! Awesome! The other thing I like about this product is that you can build around the brake lights so you won’t even need to get those external brake lights or whatnot. Of course, if you have that spare tire in the way, you are a bit limited, but if you don’t, you can build it up high. The other good thing about this product is that you can haul quite a bit of stuff and not have a trailer. I will emphasize how much better it is to drive WITHOUT a trailer in snow and ice!!!!! I would reckon it makes life easier in the rain too. You know what else is great about not having a trailer? YOU DON’T PAY EXTRA TOLLS FOR THE AXLES ON THE TRAILER!!!

Im telling you, just get it! It is a great product and is the only one like it Ive seen. IT HAS WHEELS! You can use it in the garden, or moving stuff to the garage too! I can’t say how many times Ive said “geez I wish I had a cart” and now I do! And you should too. And the price is awesome. You wont be sorry!
